This roundtable brings together the editors of four leading peer-reviewed journals dedicated to the study of Eastern Europe and Eurasia: Luca Anceschi (Europe-Asia Studies), Félix Krawatzek (Communist and Post-Communist Studies), Katharina Kucher (Jahrbücher für Geschichte Osteuropas), and Tomila Lankina (Post-Soviet Affairs). Drawing on their extensive experience in academic publishing, the panelists will discuss the evolving challenges and opportunities that scholarly journals in East European studies face. The discussion will unfold along two interconnected axes. First, the roundtable will examine how geopolitical upheavals, particularly Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, have reshaped the scholarly landscape. The editors will reflect on the effects of armed conflict and political polarization on research access, fieldwork possibilities, and the ethical responsibilities of journals publishing on contested regions. The panel will also consider strategies for amplifying underrepresented voices and maximizing the visibility of scholars based in Eastern Europe and Eurasia. Second, the roundtable will offer practical insights into the editorial process itself. Topics will include submission best practices, common pitfalls to avoid, how to craft effective responses to reviewer feedback, and the logic behind reviewer selection. The editors will share their views on self-citation norms, realistic expectations for acceptance rates and processing times, and strategies for recruiting reviewers and authors amid widespread academic overload. Finally, the panel will address transformations in scholarly publishing infrastructure, including the open access transition, the integration of artificial intelligence in editorial workflows, experiences with editorial management systems, and the implications of fully digital formats for journal identity and structure.
