Self-determination in a semi-recognized republic? The role of pop music in Kosovo's nation-building: A documentary about Dua Lipa's Sunny Hill Festival
Date:Thursday, October 8, 2026
Time:12:00 - 13:30
Location:OSI UG 2
About this event
Kosovo is independent and music an integral part of its
culture, it says. But since Kosovar-British pop star Dua Lipa brought a
major festival to the capital Prishtina to boost the country's image
abroad, local musicians face a dilemma: is this the beginning of a
long-awaited recognition, or a commercial venture that comes at their own
cost? Through the eyes of the commercial and the underground scene alike,
we observe the price of visibility in a young nation where
self-determination remains fragile.
The 50-minute documentary will be introduced by a 5-minute preface from
the director Yannik Yeşilgöz as well as the co-producer and co-writer
Zheni Yaneva. After the screening, Yeşilgöz & Yaneva are happy to have a
30-minute discussion with the audience about the meaning of
self-determination as well as the purpose of Pop Culture in contested
political environments.
