“Frau Müller hat nicht die Absicht, mehr zu bezahlen“
Natalka Sniadanko/Ukraine

Chrystyna and Solomija are two women eager to make the most of their lives. So, they decide to leave their hometown of L’viv to move to Athens. However, halfway there, they change their plans and end up staying in Berlin. There, they are confronted with a different lifestyle and culture, challenging their Ukrainian identity and raising questions about the role of Eastern European migrant workers in Germany. In her novel, Natalka Sniadanko humorously portrays two friends who bravely step into the unknown, by focusing on issues of patriarchal structures, gender roles, and the relationship between the ‘East’ and ‘West’ of Europe.

Natalka Sniadanko, born in 1973 in Lviv, is a writer, translator, and journalist. She works as a research associate at the Institute of Slavic Studies at the University of Leipzig. Her debut novel, Sammlung der Leidenschaften (translated from Ukrainian by Anja Lutter), was first published in German in 2007. In 2016, Frau Müller hat nicht die Absicht, mehr zu bezahlen (translated from Ukrainian by Lydia Nagel) was released by Haymon. In 2021, her third novel, Der Erzherzog, der den Schwarzmarkt regierte, Matrosen liebte und mein Großvater wurde (translated from Ukrainian by Maria Weissenböck), was published in German.

The reading will be followed by a discussion with Natalka Sniadanko.
